About our laser treatment
What is IPL
IPL is the abbreviation for Intense Pulsed Light. With this technique you will be treated with pulsed light. The light is emitted in several wavelengths, while a normal laser only emits the light in one wavelength. In our clinic in Amsterdam we use IPL for various cosmetic treatments.
Differences in IPL and laser treatment
IPL has several advantages over a laser treatment:
- Larger treatment area
- Can be used with multiple skin types
- Almost painless
- Less harmful to the skin
- Can be used with more hair types
- Cheaper
IPL Amsterdam
We use this treatment not only in depilation, but also in the removal of pigmentation spots and rosacea. IPL is suitable for large and small skin surfaces. In addition, the light treatment can be applied to both the face and the neck. In our treatment center in Amsterdam we offer an IPL treatment at:
Hair removal
The light flash from an IPL treatment is converted into heat via the melanin or pigment in the skin. Due to the warming, the hair follicle seals up, causing the hair to eventually come loose and no new hair can grow on this spot. IPL is therefore very effective for permanent depilation.
Pigment stains
IPL offers good results for pigmented spots. The pigment absorbs the light during treatment, causing the pigment spot to disappear. Multiple wavelengths of light makes IPL more effective against pigment than most other laser treatments.
Couperosis
With couperosis, the light affects the capillaries under the skin. IPL shrinks the small blood vessels under the skin. The body clears up the vessels themselves, causing the redness to disappear. Due to the action of IPL, the treatment can also be used in case of red moles.
Before treatment
During a personal intake interview, your skin specialist will discuss your wishes with you. If the IPL treatment gives the best results, you will receive a follow-up appointment for treatment. We ask you not to wax or epilate 4 weeks before the treatment. With laser treatment it is important that you stay out of the sun 2 weeks before the appointment.
On the day of treatment we ask you not to apply creams or make-up to your skin. If you are sensitive to cold sores, we ask you to indicate this in time. You will receive preventive medication so that you will not suffer from this after the treatment.
The IPL treatment
The treatment itself takes about 15 to 25 minutes. If the laser touches the skin, it can give a warm feeling for a short time. In general, people experience the treatment as painless.
Results of the IPL treatment
On average, 8 IPL treatments are needed to achieve the intended result. With a facial treatment we can treat you every 3 weeks in our clinic in Amsterdam. Other body parts need more recovery time. In this case we carry out the IPL treatment every 6 to 8 weeks.
After treatment
After the laser treatment your skin can be sensitive and red. This decreases within a few hours after the treatment. We recommend that you apply a good recovery cream (for example Oxygenetix) to the skin to minimize the chance of side effects. After the treatment you can continue your daily activities. However, it is important to avoid direct exposure of the treated area to the sun.
Safety
In our clinic in Amsterdam, safety is our top priority. During a consultation, your specialist will take a detailed look at what the treatment options are. Given the effect on the skin, we do not treat you with IPL when you:
- sunbathing intensively 4 weeks before treatment
- Are sensitive to scarring (keloid)
- Are pregnant
- Have permanent fillers in the area to be treated
- Have underlying skin conditions
- The drug Roaccutane used
- Have a very dark skin
- The antibiotic tetracycline used
- taking Vitamin A supplements
During the intake interview, you will be given a detailed review of medical history. If you take medication or supplements, you can often still be treated if you stop taking them a few weeks before the treatment.
Blood vessels can be experienced as disfiguring, fortunately these vessels can be tackled quite easily with a vascular laser. A vascular laser works with a wavelength of 532 nanometers in which the light is absorbed by the blood in the vials. Because of this heating, the blood vessel is switched off, as it were, and immediately after the treatment you can see all the results. Because we work with the latest laser technology, the skin around the kegs can be almost entirely spared and no damage will be caused.
Pigment is in the upper skin layer and can easily be treated with a pigment laser. This is the same laser as the vascular laser. Pigment is caused by sun damage or hormonal fluctuations.
The treatment can be applied both in the face and on the neck. Blood vessels usually manifest on the nose, nostrils, cheeks, chin and forehead, all of these areas can be treated perfectly with this laser. Pigment stains can form on decelotte, cheeks or forehead.
Usually 1 treatment is sufficient, but in some cases follow-up treatment may be necessary. However, please note that we can not address the cause of these vials / pigment, therefore the vials / pigment can become visible again over time. If the vials / pigment come back again, they can of course be lasered again. For optimal results we recommend a repeat treatment between 1 and 3 years.
With an IPL treatment the light is emitted at several wavelengths – with a laser this is only one wavelength. The IPL treatment is less intensive due to this distribution. A larger area can be treated and you recover faster after an IPL treatment.
The laser treatment can give a warm feeling to the skin. In general, people experience this as small injections on the skin. After the treatment, the skin may be red and swell slightly.
The IPL treatment is suitable for the face, the neck and the upper body. With this technique, larger skin surfaces can be treated simultaneously.
The average duration of treatment with IPL is between 15 and 25 minutes.
Your skin is still a bit red after the treatment. This will disappear within a few hours. You will see the result after a few treatments, the duration varies per treatment plan. For an optimal result, an average of 6 to 8 treatments are required.
