Pigment stains are a natural phenomenon and are common in both women and men. These spots are produced by the so-called pigment cells, which are located in the bottom layer of the epidermis. Unfortunately, the dark spots usually do not disappear on their own and can be experienced as disfiguring. They are most common on the face, on the hands, in the neck and in the décolleté. The laser treatment in our clinic in Amsterdam offers a solution for removing pigmentation spots. Make an appointment for a free consultation right away.
About our laser treatment
How pigment spots develop
Pigmentation is partly hereditary but is usually caused by sunlight, a disturbed hormone balance, medication use or stress. These factors disrupt the process of the pigment cells, causing accumulations. These are the spots that you see in the upper skin layer. In addition, pigmentation can also occur after minor wounds, acne or skin irritation. In middle age you can have to deal with so-called age spots, which express themselves in larger and bordered spots. These are mainly caused by sunlight.
You can partially prevent the formation of pigmentation spots yourself. By staying out of the sun and smearing your face every day and every season with a sunscreen of at least factor 50 you can significantly reduce the risk of pigmentation. Even after treatment of your pigmentation spots, smearing is very important to prevent further pigmentation.
Our laser treatment in Amsterdam
If you want to have pigment spots removed, laser treatment can help. The autumn is perfect during the year because you can not have sun-tanned skin during treatment.
At KNAP Institute in Amsterdam we work with the Harmony XL Pro laser, where we can treat your pigment spots with IPL. IPL stands for intense pulsed light. This laser emits a centered light pulse. The advantage of IPL is that the wider range of wavelengths means that pigment is more effectively degraded than with most other lasers.
In general, two to four treatments are sufficient to remove pigmentation spots. Multiple treatments may be required for severe pigmentation. During the treatment in our clinic in Amsterdam you will feel a warmth going through the skin. This is virtually painless and disappears in a fraction of seconds. Anesthesia is not necessary with this treatment. The treatment is completely safe and gives excellent results with different skin types. The advanced system meets the most stringent safety requirements and the treatment is always carried out by an experienced skin specialist.

After the laser treatment, the skin may swell slightly and feel a bit of burning. This disappears within 1 to 2 days. The treated pigmentation usually gets slightly darker first. The color of the skin normalises within a few days by peeling off the epidermis. With deeper pigment, this can take up to a few weeks. After the treatment, the skin is extra sensitive to the sun for another 4 weeks. Therefore, you should avoid exposure to the sun as much as possible and lubricate the treated area with sunscreen. You can resume your daily activities immediately after the treatment.
Number of treatments
In general, 2 to 3 treatments are sufficient. With a large number of pigmentation spots more treatments may be needed. During the intake interview we give you an estimate of the required sessions. If you need multiple laser treatments, this can be done with an interval of 4 to 6 weeks.
Pigment can return over time due to exposure to the sun, despite our treatment. You can always go for an additional treatment in our clinic in Amsterdam. We recommend to repeat the removal of pigment spots annually with 1 or more sessions to maintain optimal results.

What does a vascular / pigment laser treatment look like?
The treatment can be applied both in the face and on the neck. Blood vessels usually manifest on the nose, nostrils, cheeks, chin and forehead, all of these areas can be treated perfectly with this laser. Pigment stains can form on decelotte, cheeks or forehead.
Usually 1 treatment is sufficient, but in some cases follow-up treatment may be necessary. However, please note that we can not address the cause of these vials / pigment, therefore the vials / pigment can become visible again over time. If the vials / pigment come back again, they can of course be lasered again. For optimal results we recommend a repeat treatment between 1 and 3 years.
Fortunately, this treatment is usually well tolerated and the treatment is also very fast. Sometimes you may experience a warm and tingling sensation but after the pulse this immediately pulls away again.
After the treatment the skin can turn red or feel irritated. In some cases crusting can occur, but these crusts will disappear again within a few days. The final result is visible after 2 weeks.
For optimal results, it is important that your skin is as light as possible in color during treatment. We advise you to avoid the sun at least 4 weeks before treatment. If sun exposure is unavoidable, provide the skin with a good quality sunblock.
After treatment you may not shower, exercise, eat strongly spiced food or drink alcohol for 24 hours. This prevents the containers that have just been closed from jumping open again. You can of course resume your further daily activities.
Depending on the area to be treated, you should take into account a treatment duration of between 5 and 30 minutes.
