Photo-aging explained

Photo-aging. A frequently heard term, but what is photo-aging actually? Photo-aging is not the result of too many selfies (hmm..happy us!) but it is the skin symptoms that arise as a result of long-term exposure to UV radiation. Are you a fervent fan of the sun and do you not always feel good? Then chances are that your skin has suffered sun damage. Many people think that you can only sustain damage on sunny days, but make no mistake here, even on dark (not sunny) days uv reach your skin. It is therefore important to protect your skin well every day (365 days a year).

Why is protection so important?

Do not be alarmed but Photo-aging is the biggest cause of skin aging. This aging is reflected in, among other things, wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation but also in the loss of elasticity of the skin. In the worst cases, there is also a risk of skin cancer. During your teenage years you may often have baked under the Ibiza sun unprotected but do not do this anymore (the Ibiza part is okay off course;)). The consequences of photo-aging are often only visible as we get older. If you start with optimal sun protection as young as possible, you can postpone aging as long as possible. And no facial or filler can compete with this.

What if you have incurred (visible) damage in the form of pigmentation spots?

Fortunately, the effects of Photo-aging can be treated well with laser treatments. The most common complaint with Photo-aging are the pigmentation spots. These spots are produced by the so-called pigment cells, which are located in the bottom layer of the epidermis. Unfortunately, the dark spots usually do not disappear on their own and can be experienced as disfiguring. They are most common on the face, on the hands, in the neck and on the décolleté. We work with the Harmony XL Pro laser, where we can treat pigment spots with IPL.

How does the IPL treatment work?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. This laser emits a centered light pulse. The advantage of IPL is that the wider range of wavelengths means that pigment is more effectively degraded than with most other lasers. In general, two to four treatments are sufficient to remove pigmentation spots. Multiple treatments may be required for severe pigmentation.

During the treatment you feel a warmth going through the skin and this feeling has disappeared in a fraction of seconds. Anesthesia is not necessary with this treatment. After the laser treatment the skin may swell slightly and feel a bit of burning. This disappears within 1 to 2 days. The treated pigmentation usually gets slightly darker first. The color of the skin normalises within a few days by peeling off the epidermis. With deeper pigment, this can take up to a few weeks. After the treatment, the skin is still 4 weeks extra sensitive to the sun so good smearing is important.

What if you have experienced visible slacks and fine lines as a result of Photo-aging?

For the reduction of fine lines and the boosting of collagen production, we work with the Clearlift. The Clearlift also reduces uneven pigmentation. The Clearlift treats skin aging in a natural way so that the skin itself is put to work to become stronger and healthier.

How does the Clearlift laser treatment work?

The laser stimulates the deeper skin cells to make new collagen. Not only the face can be treated with the ClearLift laser, also hands, the décolleté and the neck can be tackled with the laser. Because a treatment with the ClearLift laser is painless, it can also be applied to sensitive parts, such as around the eyes and mouth. The ClearLift laser can be used on almost all skin types, even during the summer months (if you use sun protection). During the treatment a scanner is placed on the skin and you feel warm pulses on the skin. This way the entire area can be treated accurately. The treatment is painless and the skin can turn slightly red. There is no downtime, the only thing is that the skin feels warmer immediately after the treatment.

The number of treatments with the ClearLift depends on the desired result and the current state of the skin. On average, about six to eight ClearLift treatments are needed.
