What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance

When the body no longer responds well to insulin, it has become insensitive, or resistant. Someone then has insulin resistance. Insulin is the hormone that lowers the blood sugar level. It keeps the blood sugar level in balance. As soon as the body no longer reacts well to insulin, too much blood sugar remains unused in the blood and that is unhealthy.

About insulin resistance

Diabetes type 2

Insulin resistance is often a prelude to type 2 diabetes.

People who have type 2 diabetes are always insulin resistant. That is why they often receive medication that makes the body more sensitive to insulin.

Also losing weight and more exercise make the body more sensitive to insulin. That is why they are such important advice in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Causes of insulin resistance

The causes of insulin resistance are mainly overweight and too little physical activity.
But hereditary predisposition also makes some people more insulin resistant than others. For example, there are people who are quite overweight who are not insulin resistant and slim people who have to deal with it.
